NEWFOUNDLAND has THREE winners and a placed runner already from the first five starters his second crop, now racing at 2 in 2009, including NEWFOUND MAN (dam by Temperence Hill), wire to wire 8 1/2-length maiden special-weight winner at Emerald Downs on May 25 in his first career start, CORONADO BULL (dam by Coronado's Quest), first-start winner in Puerto Rico on May 15, and CLEVER RALPH (dam by Proud and True), second at Delaware Park in his May 23 racing debut.

He has SIXTEEN winners and 9 additional placed runners in his first crop, 3-year-olds of 2009. They ran well at 2 last year, with two juvenile stakes horses, seven juvenile winners and eleven placed runners at Monmouth Park, Woodbine, Philadelphia Park, and other major tracks.  

 Leading current-year runners include 2009 stakes filly OUR KHRYSTY (dam by Lord Carson), SW at 2 last year and a closing third beaten only 1 1/4 lengths in Laurel Park's $50,000 Marshua S.;  GOTTAHOPE (dam by You and I), come-from-behind winner of a $30,160 Penn National allowance race following a 9 1/4-length win and a 5-length score in her career debut, and GREAT DOXOLOGY (dam by Forty Niner), stretch-running April 18 maiden winner at Gulfstream Park after placing there in her career debut.

Demand for his second crop continues strong, as his first 2-year-old offered at auction in 2009 brought $60,000 at the OBS April sale.

His 2009 runners also include undefeated Chilean-bred NEW SPIRIT (dam by Kitwood), victor in 1,200-meter handicap on April 18 at Hipodromo Chile following a similar score in January, NEW STRIKE (dam by Smart Strike), 5 1/-4 length victress at Lone Star Park in her second career start; plus 3-length maiden special-weight winner ICY LAND LADY (dam by Bates Motel); Philadelphia Park maiden winner BOUNDTOBEFOUND (dam by Jade Hunter); and additional maiden winners MISS FARK (dam by Wild Again) and SHINY FLAG (dam by Devil's Bag). 

His first stakes winner, OUR KHRYSTY, is now 3-for-6 with earnings of $80,280, including a 1 1/2-length victory in the Alison Mcclay Overnight S. at Penn National at 2, and a third in the Marshua S. at Laurel already this year. She also posted a 2-length come-from-behind victory in a $44,250 open allowance race at Philadelphia Park, and set fractions of :22.57, :46.44, :58.52, and 1:04.71 in her wire to wire 9-length maiden special-weight debut as she raced "...in hand and widened to win with plenty left" according to the Equibase chart.

His first runner, NEWFOUND MAGIC (dam by Eltish), won in her career debut at 2 at Camarero Race Track, and also third in the 6-furlong Clasico Gran Duque [PR-G3].

STORMY LAND 
(dam by Crafty Prospector - photo at right) was second in his career debut, beaten only a half-length in a $40,600 Delaware Park maiden special-weight race, before posting a wire to victory at Delaware Park in his second start on June 1.

BIRGET (dam by Mining), set all the fractions en route to victory in a $31,630 maiden special-weight race at Prairie Meadows; WOW FACTOR (dam by Montbrook) won over the all-weather surface at Varese, Italy on December 23; TIME TO FIND went wire to wire setting internal fractions of :21.94, :44.60, and :56.99 before drawing off for a 7 3/4-length score at Turf Paradise on December 15; and NEW SPIRIT scored by 3 1/4 in his December 4 career debut.

Placed runners include NOBODY LIKE MIKE (dam by Woodman), second in a $38,221 Monmouth Park maiden special-weight in his first career start; HANDSOME I AM (dam by Irgun), second maiden special-weight at Ellis Park in his second lifetime start; SECRET EMBRACE (dam by Northern Wolf), second in her maiden special-weight career debut; ROGERSVILLE (dam by Mogambo), second by a nose in a Colonial Downs turf maiden special-weight in his racing debut; and SHOTGUN START (dam by Thirty Six Red), second at Woodbine in her first career outing.

His first-crop juveniles averaged $36,688, led by a $100,000 Barretts March colt and a $65,000 OBS March colt, while his second-crop yearlings already include a $45,000 Keeneland January colt.

His first-crop yearlings also made their presence felt in the sales arena, led by Keeneland September colts for $100,000, $60,000, and $50,000, a Saratoga Preferred colt for $43,000, and a $40,000 OBS August filly.

A $3.3 million Keeneland September Yearling, multiple Graded SW and multiple G1-placed NEWFOUNDLAND is by the incomparable Storm Cat, who has at least 24 sons that have sired Grade 1 winners, out of 3-time Grade 1 winner Clear Mandate, by 2007 leading broodmare sire Deputy Minister, whose daughters have produced 147 SWs including 2007 Eclipse champions and classic winners CURLIN and RAGS TO RICHES. NEWFOUNDLAND’S first three dams are Grade 1 SWs, and he is a half-brother to $3.2 million yearling, stakes winner and sire FULL MANDATE and full brother to multiple graded stakes performer The Mighty Tiger.
 
In addition to running second in both the the $1,000,000 Jockey Club Gold Cup (G1) and the Suburban H. (G1), NEWFOUNDLAND won the Skip Away H. (G3) (defeating BOWMAN'S BAND, OFFLEE WILD, etc.) and the Canadian Turf H. (G3) for trainer Todd Pletcher.

NEWFOUNDLAND retired with 7 wins and earnings of $677,534. According to Brookdale’s Fred Seitz, “He looks like his $3 million price-tag. This horse has it all: a world-class pedigree; his yearling price speaks of his conformation and he was one of North America's top older runners at 4. We’re delighted to have him at Brookdale.”
